The lavender word is a derivative of the verb to wash, maybe descended of the Italian lavanda (action to wash), but that could really go back up to the Latin lavandaria (linen to wash), probably to the origin of the English lavender
(lavender toward 1265). This etymology lets think that very early one used lavender to perfume the freshly washed linen. Other use very old, the one to put lavender in the water of the bath or the sachets of flowers dried in the cabinets, to move away the mites and to perfume the wardrobe.
Since a very long time also, one use lavender as healing antiseptics and anti
snake bite. In case of viper bite, one rubbed the wound with a handful of lavender (it could explain the name of the lavender aspic). The plant was also very used (and the East always) to fight the lice.
In physiotherapy, one recommends it to fight the anxiety, the jumpiness and the insomnias, but also to relieve the rheumatisms and to take care of the respiratory way infections.
It is of course the perfume shop that makes the biggest use of lavender for perfume,
soaps, detergents and toilet paper.
